Special Session: Fault Analysis and Protection of High-proportion Power Electronic Power Systems

With the large-scale grid integration of renewable energy generation, the proportion of power electronic converters continues to increase. The fault characteristics of power electronic converters are significantly different from those of traditional synchronous generators. During system faults, the output short-circuit current amplitude of power electronic converters is limited, the phase is controlled, and the harmonic content is high, exhibiting strong nonlinear controlled characteristics. Traditional protection principles based on the fault characteristics of synchronous generators face an increased risk of incorrect action, and the fault analysis and protection of high-proportion power electronic power systems face new challenges.

The relay protection is the first defense line of power grid safe operation. However, due to significant differences in fault characteristics between high-proportion power-electronic power systems and traditional power grids, relay protection often fails to operate reliably, leading to frequent incidents of relay protection malfunctions or incorrect actions. Ensuring the rapid and reliable clearance of faults in high-proportion power-electronic power systems remains a pressing challenge that requires breakthrough solutions.

Organizers:

Dr. Yu Chen, Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Yu Chen is currently a lecturer in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include new power system relay protection and control. He has published more than 30 SCI/EI-indexed journal papers as first author or communication author, been granted or filed 38 Chinese invention patents, and contributed to the development of one National standard. He has led one National Natural Science Foundation Project and one sub-project of Smart Grid-National Major Science and Technology Project. He is a member of the Smart Micro-grid Technology Professional Committee of the China Energy Research Society. Dr. Chen is also a reviewer for several prestigious international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. He has won one second prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award.

Dr. Bohao Zhou, Tianjin University

Bohao Zhou is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the National Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform for Energy Storage Technology, Tianjin University, under the supervision of Professor Bin Li. His research interests focus on protection and control technologies for power-electronics-dominated power systems with high renewable energy penetration. He has published 28 SCI/EI-indexed journal papers, been granted or filed 20 Chinese invention patents, and contributed to the development of one industry standard. He serves as Principal Investigator of one sub-project under a national “2030 Major Project” and has led four industry-sponsored research projects. Dr. Zhou is also a reviewer for several prestigious international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, and IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery. He received the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award from the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering in 2025 and the First Prize of the Jiangsu Electric Power Science and Technology Progress Award in 2025.
